Stop squashing your squishy bits together

Summer is on its way and it’s now time to get rid of the duvet over the top of your tummy muscles and replace it with a sheet!!!

Tight stomach muscles, that work to stabilise your back and hold your torso in the upright position, have nothing to do with the layer of subcutaneous fat – “the duvet” that sits over the top of your stomach muscles.

Your stomach muscles that stabilise your pelvis and your lower back in the upright position, are best exercised in that upright position!!! Not by sitting on the floor or a swiss ball and squashing your squishy bits together – generally known as sit ups or crunches!!!

So a tight toned tummy comes from doing two things – burning the fat off the top and strengthening the muscles underneath the fat in the best, most functional way.

5 Tips For Getting Rid Of Your Duvet

The duvet stuffing is fat and fat is burnt off quickest, from every part of your body by......

Moving More: Increase your normal daily activity levels. Walk don’t drive, take the stairs and forget the lift or escalator were ever invented, hand deliver a message to your colleague across the office instead of emailing them, play outside with your kids (if you don’t have any borrow someone else’s)

Doing Planned Exercise: 100 minutes or more of exercise each week. A Sunday stroll to the park smelling the roses on the way doesn’t count. Walk fast enough so you puff a little, each time you go for a walk work harder and in know time you will get fit. Fit people burn fat faster, including fat of their tummy.

Eating Mostly Fruit, Veggies and Low Fat Food: Fruit and veggies for energy to exercise harder and less fat so less fat has a chance to build up on your tummy area.

Drinking More Fluid: No not beer guys!! Dehydrated bodies feel tired and lethargic and are very unlikely to get off the couch to exercise.

Lifting Weights: A great strength training program will make you stronger, speed up your metabolic rate and force your body to burn fat faster – including off your tummy.

How To Strengthen Your Tummy Muscles:

There are 3 main muscles of your core, your rectus abdominus, transverse abdominus and your obliques. These all need to be kept strong because they supply the support for your pelvis and lower back in the upright position. To increase the strength of your stomach muscles and to guarantee they are working to protect your back you will need to teach them to work in the most functional, effective way. This means in the standing position making them do what they are designed to do – support the torso, stabilise the pelvis and support and stabilise your lower back.

Please don’t waste your precious time doing sit-ups, crunches or any other abdominal exercise performed lying on the floor. In this position, the abdominal muscles are not supporting or stabilising – the floor is doing the supporting and it is already flat and hard!!!

Note: Sit-ups and crunches do not burn fat (none) off your tummy!!!

The burning sensation you feel when you do sit-ups or crunches is a build up of lactic acid that is not getting out of your stomach muscles because the movement is so short – it is not exploding fat cells!!

The key is making your stomach muscles work hard and correctly all day long. Hold them in place (draw your belly button into your spine and keep it there by using your stomach muscles) When you do your strength training exercise, your stomach muscles will be stabilising and supporting you throughout the exercise. Even picking little Johnny up and giving him a hug “SWITCH THEM ON”. As your other muscles get stronger, so will your abs.  If you're unsure how to do this get in touch with me HERE

The best exercises to help work your abs are squats, dead-lifts and chin ups. If you currently aren’t doing these exercises get your Personal Trainer (that is if you have one) to get you doing them.

If your Personal Trainer still has you doing sit-ups or crunches to burn fat, then they would also need to believe that you can burn fat off your face by chewing gum'''

In this day of great research, your fitness professional should be updated enough and smart enough to get you off the floor, moving to burn fat off your stomach and off the floor and lifting heavy things, in the most functional way possible, to strengthen your stomach muscles.

Move more, eat less fat, lift heavy things = Tight, toned tummy
