You won't burn fat doing it lying down

Some thing’s just sound too good to be true. Can you imagine a machine that makes you lose fat, tone up and reduce cellulite while you are lying down relaxing, reading a magazine or watching TV'

How awesome would it be to go to sleep and wake up trim, taught and terrific with a new body by doing nothing but lying there. The world would be full of fit healthy people.

There are manufacturers and providers of products out there taking money off innocent people who are guilty of nothing but ignorance and hope. Some of these crazy products making outrageous claims include passive exercise machines i.e. just lay on your back and the machine does the work for you. The machines move your limbs and fatty body parts around in a vibrating manner, supposedly breaking down fat cells and toning your muscles.

These machines are no better than the vibrating belts of the 70’s that you would wrap around your bottom to break down the fat cells. They would have been much more fun when you faced them the opposite way; at least you received some sort of stimulation – although probably not fat burning.

Other misleading products include toning machines that involve plugging you up with electrodes. These electrodes are connected to problem spots like the tummy, hips and thighs and send low frequency electrical impulses into the muscle. This is supposed to tone up the muscle, make you firmer, burn fat and change your body shape. All by just laying there and waiting for it to happen!! The impulses are such low frequencies on these machines that you would simulate more muscle activation sitting up in bed than from the machine. These machines are sometimes used to help rehabilitate and stimulate injured muscle – not for fat burning.

They are no longer recommended however; when they were they were used on patients who were completely immobilised. Any form of stimulation would be of some minimal benefit to a wasting muscle. Hardly applicable to the healthy individual.

Many of these machines make unfounded claims like...

“In just minutes a day”

“is the equivalent to an hour of walking”

“tones you as quickly as weight training”

“will make you more toned, firmer, and thinner” (they forget to tell you “poorer”)

The more promises they make the more it tends to cost.

 Points you should remember...

Muscle is never untoned, it is a live active tissue in the body – it is always toned.

Fat on top of the muscle gives you the un toned look – get rid of the fat to look toned.

Muscle can only get stronger and weaker or bigger and smaller – not toned and untoned.

Muscles only respond and adapt to progressive overload – that is weight training.

If you want to change your body shape – you must do weight training.

The more active you become the more fat you will burn. Fat is like petrol in a car, you have to drive it to burn petrol and the further you drive it, the more petrol you burn. If you keep the car in the garage and vibrate it, push it, rub cream on it, put electrodes on it and open shut the bonnet, you will not burn any petrol – or fat.
