Pipi's to Muscles

How long after a hard work out do your muscles feel sore?  Generally the day after and then the second day after your workout is the worst. From the third day you are feeling better with the discomfort fading away.

This soreness that you feel after a workout is delayed onset of muscle soreness (Doms). This is your muscle complaining to you that you made it wake up and do some hard work other than helping you get off the couch and head to the fridge to grab another drink/biscuit/ slice of cheesecake.... Mmmmm cheesecake.

When you lift heavy weights your muscles get tiny little tears in the muscle fibres (this is what causes your muscles to complain).  After your workout your muscles busily try to repair themselves.  Before you can work these muscles again, they need to have repaired themselves and also super compensated just in case you get them to lift something heavier.  If you re-work the same muscles again to soon after your previous workout, you are just re-damaging your muscle before it has had a chance to repair itself meaning you are pushing the proverbial up hill.

Can you picture this.... On Monday you do let's say Bench Press @ 50kg and on the last rep (let's say 8) you can't move the bar any further.  You go home feeling pretty pumped and proud that you lifted 50kgs.  You wake up Tuesday morning and you can't lift you arms let alone a cup of coffee (muscles protesting). You struggle through the day feeding your body healthy nutritious food and you go to bed.  Wednesday morning you have the same feeling (muscles still complaining) and you wonder why you put your self through this?  Come Thursday morning you don't feel that bad at all and continue your daily tasks.  If you leave those complaining muscles to repair themselves for the rest of the week and then when Monday rolls around you attempt 52kg on the Bench Press you may find that you can now lift this higher weight for 7 or 8 reps.  You feel really pumped and proud now!!!

Those complaining muscles of yours have had a Health and Safety meeting and decided that they had better sort themselves out before you try to lift that 50kg again. They repair all of the little torn fibres; not just back to where they were previously but making them a little stronger so they don't have to work as hard next time.  This is where you come in and upset your muscles by increasing the weight ever so slightly so they can't rest on their past achievements therefore you continue to get stronger.

The stronger you get, the more muscle you put on, the more muscle you have the more of a fat burning machine your body becomes.
